MAGIC is a 37′ sportfishing Day Boat, recently repowered by twin 450hp Caterpillar C-7 diesel engines giving her a top speed of 35kts., with a 27kt. cruse. Built in 1985 at Wanchese, NC by Sunny Briggs for the John Lee from Wilson, and originally christened as Maverick. From the get go, the boat was known as a fast boat, and a fish raiser.
I suppose that it would behoove me to tell a little about myself, by way of introduction. My name is Charles Edward McClung and I’m older than dirt, but everyone calls me Ned.
I’ve lived most of my life in the southeast US, mainly because I’ve never seen a good reason not to. Several years ago I attended my 40th High School reunion in Buckingham, Va. I attended the University of Georgia for many years, and wound up getting my Masters of Science degree in Marine Science from the University of South Florida, St Pete.
I moved from Florida to Carteret County, to be with Constance Anthony (who consented to be my wife) in 1989. This makes me, what they call in down East Carolina, a dingbat. I think one must be born here to avoid the appellation. At the time of my move to NC, I had, along with my partner Dr. Norman Blake, a small environmental consulting firm in St. Pete., which suited me just fine. Just, please don’t put me down as a tree hugger, a dingbat is enough.
After my move, it didn’t take me long to realize that the coastal waters here were one of the premiere Big Game fishing spots of the world. I’ve always likened it to living in Kenya in the old days, if you liked Big Game hunting. Well, what man hasn’t thought about getting a boat and becoming a Charter Captain and living out Hemmingwayesque fantasies of a manly life?
And since I’ve done many foolish things in my life, I went straight on and did it. And, let me tell you, it’s kind of like that song-“Mama’s, don’t let your boys grow up to be cowboys..”
